🌿 🍉 Opportunities and boundaries of agro-ecological approaches in fruit and vegetable production systems in Kenya 🍉 🌿Our ATSAF Academy JST Scholar Alex Eeman Aule explores agro-ecological approaches of fruit and vegetable production systems in East-African drylands. More specifically, this collaboration between Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen & Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT aims to examine agronomic, ecological, and socio-economic factors to identify and enhance methods for boosting local fruit and vegetable yields in Turkana County, Kenya. “By integrating local knowledge and experiences, the study endeavours to propose contextually appropriate strategies that promote resilience and sustainability in fruit and vegetable production. Ultimately, the findings of this research are expected to inform and guide future initiatives aimed at improving food security and livelihoods in Turkana County and similar dryland areas across East Africa.”, says Alex. An ATSAF scholarship not only gives you the chance of financial support but also opens doors to many opportunities for academic and personal growth.#ATSAF e.V. supports PhD and MSc scholars from German and international universities in CGIAR++ research projects and strengthens the links between universities and international, development-oriented #agricultural #research. Here is some more detail: postponing the adoption of technology is costly. The technology of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been technically available decades ago; however, it´s adoption has been limited due to political reasons resulting in lengthy regulatory process, which slows down the R&D transfer and affects agricultural productivity and food security. Our study projected the impact of R&D transfer speed up and relaxation of regulatory framework on agricultural productivity and food security towards 2050. It also allows to assess important geopolitical consequences of regulatory framework adjustment. Speeding up R&D transfer could bring over 200 billion US$ globally expressed as NPV of GDP benefits.
